About the Show

On March 15th 2016 every secondary school in Ireland celebrated ‘Proclamation Day’.

Big Mountain Productions, with Two Tube and RTÉ 2fm invited 11-17 year olds to create a one-minute film documenting or interpreting their response to ‘Proclamation Day’. From West Cork to Buncrana in Donegal and everywhere between, young people responded by making and submitting dozens of films and documentaries bursting with their ideas and opinions.

Individuals, schools and clubs all got involved and the submissions featured people, places and accents from every corner of the country, all with something to say about Ireland 100 years after the Proclamation.

Some made narrative films based on themes from the original Proclamation, like equality, civil liberty and national pride, while others made documentaries about current issues facing the nation like cyberbullying and homelessness. The submissions included dance, animation, songs and plays as well as documentaries and sketches.

The variety of subjects and filmmaking professionalism in many of the films was very impressive. A wide selection of projects have been woven into a half-hour documentary for RTÉ 2 showcasing the concerns, interests, hopes and ambitions of Irish youth, as well as their storytelling skills.

This documentary, ‘Project Proclamation’ is hosted by young Dublin poet Melissa Kavanagh. She has written a new composition which weaves its way through the various submitted films, drawing out the main themes and reflecting on the impact of Proclamation Day on the lives of young Irish people.
